Acidity refers to a group of the symptoms
caused by an imbalance between the acid secreted systems of the stomach and the
proximal intestine and the protection system that ensures their safety. The
stomach normally secrete acid which is essential in the digestive process. This
acid helps to break down food during digestion. When there is an over
production of acid by the gastric glands of the stomach, it is known as
acidity. However, there are some types of ulcers where acid secretion is either
normal or reduced. Acidity is responsible for symptoms like indigestion,
heartburn and ulcer formation (erosion of the lining of the stomach or
intestines). Acidity is very high in highly emotional and nervous individuals.
It is also more common in developed and industrialized countries, although
recently the incidence has increased in developing countries as well.
Consumption of alcohol, highly spicy foods, non-vegetarian diet and
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are also victims of gastric
acidity. Prevention mainly avoids known causative factors such as alcohol
consumption, spicy foods, NSAID's, drugs like steroids, etc. Psychiatric
treatment should be given to patients with excessive nervous and emotional
disposals and those involved in high-stress jobs. Avoiding non-vegetarian diet
is also useful in reducing the symptoms of acidity. "
